“All Together Now” – Integrating Advising & Student Support Services – by Lara Ubaldi – York University conference planning committee
In late February, more than 50 members of the York University academic advising community came together for a half-day planning session in preparation for hosting the 2017 OAAP Annual conference in October: “’All Together Now’ – Integrating Advising & Student Support Services”.
York advisors reflected on the conference theme of “Integrated and Holistic Advising Approaches”. They brainstormed on the kinds of initiatives that they would like to learn about from their advising colleagues in Ontario Colleges and Universities.
Models of advising service delivery rated high on York advisors’ list of things to learn about from their provincial counterparts. York advisors are interested in learning more about “one-stop-shop” operations, career counselling and other student service integrations or partnerships with advising. A vast number of additional topics came to mind, particularly those where processes intersect with another unit, department or even another institution. Transfer credit processes, advising for College-University pathways and reverse transfers, integration of technology into advising, ‘at risk’ outreach and proactive advising techniques to name just a few.
In addition to brainstorming what they’d like to learn, York’s advisors created an inventory of their own best practices and pilot project experiences to share with their colleagues at the conference. Whether you are a seasoned pro, or brand new to conference presenting, York’s advisors urge you to contribute to the knowledge by submitting a presentation proposal. The call for proposals is open until June 16

Two of the main goals of the OAAP Steering Committee for this coming year are to support a fantastic conference at York University and to start a plan for fundraising for future OAAP conferences.
We are always recruiting for Steering Committee members! Consider getting involved and making a difference in your Advising community!
